The scourge of customer satisfaction surveys
  + stars: | 2024-04-22 | by ( Adam Rogers | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
— is devoted to customer surveys. Other metrics followed: the Customer Satisfaction Score, the Customer Effort Score, measurements of the entire Customer Experience. At the peak of the so-called sharing economy, customer surveys were all-powerful. The glut of customer surveys has created an additional problem for marketers. "We ask for customer feedback on these things all the time, but it's hard for a customer to give you immediate feedback, because a customer doesn't know what quality is yet."

Why can’t we stop calling X, Twitter?
  + stars: | 2024-02-23 | by ( Saira Mueller | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +10 min
While some people (mainly fans of Musk) have embraced the X brand, most have not. Many people, both online and in person, still call the platform Twitter, and refer to posts as tweets. WHY ARE WE STILL CALLING THIS PLATFORM TWITTER. Even when you do see X, it's framed as "X, formerly Twitter". So the brand is what they say it is… it’s not that customers can’t stop calling it Twitter, it’s that they won’t.”

"We heard at the December meeting that no official expected to raise rates further as a baseline outcome. And we've heard that Fed officials are beginning the discussions around rate cuts," Matthew Luzzetti, Deutsche Bank's chief U.S. economist, said in an interview. Now, there's considerably more uncertainty as multiple statements from Fed officials point to a more cautious approach about declaring victory over inflation. The inflation rate judged by core personal consumption expenditures prices, a U.S. Department of Commerce measure that the Fed favors, indicates the real funds rate to be around 2.4%. Fed officials figure the long-run real rate to be closer to 0.5%.

One of the problems the Chiefs had against the Raiders was the time it took to get plays into the game. The ABCs of Modern Life, According to Sheila Heti
  + stars: | 2024-01-29 | by ( Dwight Garner | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
ALPHABETICAL DIARIES, by Sheila Heti“No one at this point in history knows how to live, so we read biographies and memoirs, hoping to get some clues,” Sheila Heti writes in “Alphabetical Diaries,” her powerful and intimate new book. In “Alphabetical Diaries” Heti comes at this question slant, as Emily Dickinson advised truth tellers to do — so slant that you may feel you are in a ship that has been thrown sideways. The reader of “Alphabetical Diaries” will not be disappointed in this regard. Heti has done the really hard thinking about submission and its opposite. One four-letter word is zealously deployed in this book, and that word is not “love.”

At Meta, in CEO Mark Zuckerberg's words, 2023 was the "year of efficiency," and the stock jumped almost 200% alongside 20,000 job cuts. AI demand is so great that some tech companies are cutting headcount in parts of the business to invest more heavily in developing AI products. Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, appears at the Political Opening of the Gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, on Aug. 23, 2023. Within tech, a wide variety of companies, big and small and spanning the consumer and enterprise markets, are eliminating jobs. But, he added, there's an "enormous base" of small and mid-sized tech companies across the U.S., and that in some cases contractors, freelancers and overseas workers are being hit particularly hard.

A large Charged Lemonade contains 390 milligrams — nearly the 400-milligram daily maximum of caffeine that the Food and Drug Administration says healthy adults can safely consume. The legal complaint called Charged Lemonade a "dangerous energy drink" and argues that Panera failed to adequately warn consumers about its ingredients, which also include guarana extract, another stimulant. The caffeine content of Panera's Charged Lemonade has always been listed in-store, Panera said. Katz had gotten a large Charged Lemonade hours before she died, and had had at least one Charged Lemonade in the days prior, according to Victoria Rose Conroy, Katz's roommate and close friend. Crawford said if Charged Lemonade is going to remain on the menu, it should be less accessible to customers.

On Sept. 10, 2022, Katz purchased a charged lemonade from a Panera Bread in Philadelphia, according to the suit. It's an energy drink that has lemon flavor," said Elizabeth Crawford, a partner at Philadelphia-based law firm Kline & Specter, PC. The lawsuit alleges the charged lemonade is "defective in design because it is a dangerous energy drink." Conroy said Katz had bought at least one other charged lemonade in the days prior to her cardiac arrest. Katz's parents, who declined to speak about the lawsuit, are desperate for people to understand exactly what is in Panera's charged lemonade before they buy it, Crawford said.

Ruckel had to make a choice: Lower the price on Amazon or ask Chewy to raise the price of his product. The company also invests in tools to help sellers offer “competitive prices,” he said. Scott Needham, who sells on Amazon and runs a product-finder tool for other Amazon sellers, said he was “surprised by some of the points that the FTC selected.”watch now“I have over the years been very critical of Amazon,” Needham told CNBC. Competitors like Shopify and Walmart are increasingly viable alternatives for many categories of sellers, Needham said, not to mention rapidly growing Chinese e=commerce companies like Temu. Among those is a greater ability for Amazon sellers to communicate with buyers, offering select customers certain promotions.

Web3 music platforms are changing the industry, giving artists better payouts and ways to reach fans. The strange, improbable rise of Mark Zuckerberg 3.0
  + stars: | 2023-07-30 | by ( Kali Hays | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +27 min
In early July, Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the latest and perhaps most consequential product in Meta's history: a new model of Mark Zuckerberg. Silicon Valley Zuck was a husband and father with a legacy to build and protect at all costs. Silicon Valley Zuck was suddenly faced with something he'd never dealt with before, shrinking revenue. Still clinging to his persona as Silicon Valley Zuck, Zuckerberg engaged in an all-out media blitz to hawk his vision for the metaverse. They were the sort of people Harvard Zuck would have scoffed at and Silicon Valley Zuck would have gently ignored.

We know there are so many reasons why this bull market has eluded so many. It's sudden broadening into health care, transports and financials just when we were told the bull was slain by its lack of breadth. I hope readers here know that I felt that only by tuning out the Fed could you make maximum money in the market. You simply had to ignore the verbiage, block out the gasbags who simply failed to see the two-staged bull market right in front of them. Needless to say, if you needed any evidence that we are in a bull market, the rally in that dog may be enough to make the prosecution rest.

The BK Barbie Combo features a cheeseburger topped with bacon bits and dressed with a bright pink sauce that Burger King says has a "smoky" flavor. Killer whales near Spain and Portugal have been confronting, and even sinking, boats. The killer whales typically approach the ship from behind and then try to strike the rudder until the boat is immobilized. People online have joked the killer whales are "orcanizing" an "orca rebellion," with many social media users rooting for the whales. But the result could be an increase in fear of killer whales in the popular imagination, similar to what the movie "Jaws" did for sharks. In reality, killer whales — which got their names from hunting other whales — do not pose a significant risk of harm to humans.

Oral arguments focused on whether something called the "Trump Organization" legally exists. The judge, meanwhile, warned that "come hell or high water" an October trial will not be delayed. "Come hell or high water, and pardon my French," the judge added of his set-in-stone trial start time: 10 a.m. on Monday, October 2, 2023. It's shorthand for them, as well — James' lawsuit references "the Trump Organization," for convenience's sake, some 300 times in its 222 pages. The judge urged the attorney general's office and the defendants' lawyers to avoid a protracted argument over sanctions.
The rate increase expected at the Federal Open Market Committee's Jan. 31-Feb. 1 meeting would bring the policy rate to the 4.5%-4.75% range. That's two quarter-point rate hikes short of the level most Fed policymakers in December thought would be "sufficiently restrictive" to bring inflation under control. At the same time, he said, "there's going to be some caution" about doing anything that could feed market expectations that a pause in rate hikes is imminent. Fed policymakers, as of December at least, all see no rate cuts until 2024. "The key question is how committed they are to further rate hikes."

What to know about Mastodon, the Twitter alternative
  + stars: | 2022-11-08 | by ( Rachel Metz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
I am one of these Mastodon newcomers, trying it out of curiosity and because Twitter has felt increasingly toxic over time. Davide Bonaldo/SOPA Images/ShutterstockBut while it can be exciting to seek out a new social network, it can be tricky, too. Mastodon and Twitter have some similarities, yet they’re quite different — both in how they work and how they’re operated. I have mostly taken the more manual route by searching on Twitter for the word “Mastodon” to pull up people I follow who have added Mastodon usernames to their Twitter profile names. There also isn’t a Mastodon equivalent to Twitter’s quote-tweet feature, where you can repost another user’s post and append your own thoughts to it.
With Twitter in chaos, Mastodon is on fire
  + stars: | 2022-11-05 | by ( Rachel Metz | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN Business —In the week since Elon Musk took over Twitter, the number of people signing up for a small social network called Mastodon has surged. Ascannio/Adobe StockRochko said in an interview Thursday that Mastodon gained 230,000 users since October 27, when Musk took control of Twitter. And she pointed out that Twitter users may migrate to Mastodon in particular because its user experience is pretty similar to Twitter’s. But unlike on Twitter, where I can easily interact with a large audience, my Mastodon network is less than 100 followers. A social-media escape hatchI’m not quite ready to close my Twitter account, though; for me, Mastodon is a sort of social-media escape hatch in case Twitter becomes unbearable.
BIG PICTUREThe Fed is operating on data that’s offered a murky view of the economy’s health in recent months. On one hand, the housing market is cooling off markedly, but higher borrowing costs so far haven’t made a dent in inflation. That may reassure the Fed that there’s room to keep rate hikes going without triggering a recession. There is a glut of avocados in America and that’s triggered a steep drop in wholesale prices. Don’t yell at me, I don’t make the rules…Anyway, starting Thursday, it’s festive cup season, which Starbucks fans seem excited for.
That's legit, but it's being used so often now that we seem to be avoiding a simpler word: "Detailed." It seems like everyone wants to take things offline instead of talking about it later, like they used to say in the old days. 'We remain cautious'Sometimes, "we remain cautious" is used to say nothing — meaning "we're not going to say much because who knows?" Other times, it's used to say "not to worry; we're not going to do anything untoward." But now, it's overused: WFH clothes, WFH hacks (see above), WFH everything.
